Cooking can be fun and exciting. This gives the feeling of accomplishment and can relieve stress to some people.

Those who are just starting to cook might not feel the excitement yet nor the accomplishment, but they will in due time. As of the moment, it is important to concentrate on the basics of cooking and practice all the time. Take good advice from your friends or ask a local chef some questions. You might also want to consider these cooking tips for beginners.

Here are 10 Basic Cooking Tips that beginners should consider:

Have someone beside you for guidance.

When cooking for the first time, it is advisable to have someone who knows how to cook with you. This person will be able to help you operate and define things that you are unfamiliar with.

Always be safe

Wear or use appropriate protection when needed.
Safety should be the top priority. Wear an apron all the time. Use appropriate kitchen gloves or oven mitt (Ove Glove is a good one) when holding hot pans and trays.

Learn how to operate kitchen equipments, gadgets, and tools

Cooking will involve the use of kitchen equipments such as stove top, oven, microwave, grill, etc. Chances are that you will also need to use kitchen tools, gadgets, and utensils to peel, chop, puree, and cook the food. It is a must that you have an idea on how kitchen equipments and tools work so that you will be able to use them properly in a safe manner.

Understand the basic cooking terminologies

Knowledge has always been the key to success. Try to understand the meaning of basic cooking terminologies. For example, to simmer is different than boiling. If you are instructed to simmer the meat for 30 minutes, this means to cook it just below the boiling point. This usually extracts the flavor from the meat and makes it tender. Boiling it will produce a different result.

Have a recipe handy

Look at a recipe as an instruction manual. This will be your main guide in cooking the dish that you desire. It is a must for beginners to follow a recipe religiously in order to arrive at the expected result. Ingredient substitutions and measurement changes can be done later when you are in the intermediate level.

Have all the ingredients ready before starting

Ingredients are the basic part of every dish. You cannot make a successful dish if you lack ingredients. Make sure that all ingredients are prepared before hand before heating your stovetop. Peel and slice all vegetables and meats as needed. Measure and segregate all the seasonings and spices. It is easier to cook if all the ingredients are available and ready.

Do not forget to taste before proceeding

One common mistake of beginners is not to taste the dish while it is being cooked. It is significant to taste the dish even once after all the seasonings have been applied. This will let you know if something is lacking or needs to be added. Remember, recipes might be your guide, but your taste buds is the final judge.

Observe proper timing. Do not undercook or overcook the food.

In almost all aspects, timing is everything. This is also true in cooking. Meat takes some time to simmer in order to become tender, while vegetables should be cooked in a short amount of time to avoid overcooking. Frying chicken for a short time might cook the outer part, but will leave the inside undercooked. You must observe proper timing in cooking different dishes to obtain best results.

Monitor the temperature. Learn when to cook in low, medium, or high heat.

Aside from timing, temperature is also important. You might need to cook the meat longer to make it tender, but lower temperature is required for you to achieve the expected result. In this example, cooking the meat in high heat can overcook it. High heat is needed usually for quick cooking such as sautéing or stir-frying.

Learn from your mistakes and try not to repeat them

Experience is the best teacher. Do not repeat the same mistakes and always make room for improvement. You will be an expert cook soon.

Chicken Kiev is a well known chicken dish. This tasty recipe is composed of boneless chicken breasts, butter, some spices and seasonings.

This dish is prepared by combining the butter with the spices and seasonings. The mixture is them placed in the fridge to attain a more solid form. Part of the mixture is placed over the chicken breasts (which are flattened by pounding). The breast is rolled to trap the mixture in the middle. This is later dredged in flour and breadcrumbs, and then fried until golden brown. This can also be baked in the oven.

At first glance, Chicken Kiev might be mistaken as Chicken Cordon Bleu. Both dishes look the same in the outside, while there is a huge difference when each roll is sliced. Whatever the differences are, both dishes are superb, without a doubt.

This recipe calls for Panko bread crumbs. If in case this is not available, you can use ordinary bread crumbs, Italian bread crumbs, and even all-purpose flour alone. Also, make sure that the oil is not too hot before you start frying. The bread crumbs may burn right away when placed in very hot oil. Try to maintain your heat to medium.

Ingredients:

7 tablespoons butter (unsalted)
2 lbs boneless chicken breast (pounded until flat)
2 pieces raw eggs
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup Panko bread crumbs
1 teaspoon dried thyme
1 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
2 teaspoon ground black pepper
2 teaspoon salt
3 cups cooking oil

Procedure:

1. Combine butter, 1/2 tsp ground black pepper, 1/2 tsp salt, dried thyme, and garlic powder. Mix well and refrigerate for 2 hours.

2. Season chicken with remaining salt and pepper. Set aside.

3. Slice the butter mixture and slice into 5 to 6 equal pieces.

4. Place each slice of butter at one end of each flattened chicken breast. Roll until a tube-like figure with butter slice in the middle is formed. Insert a toothpick to the chicken roll to prevent it from opening.

5. Heat oil in a deep pan.

6. Dredge the chicken roll in flour, then in the beaten egg mixture, and lastly on the breadcrumbs. Make sure that the whole roll is covered.

7. Deep fry in low to medium heat until the color turns light to golden brown. You may also bake the chicken in the oven at 350 F for 20 to 30 minutes.

8. Place the chicken in a plate lined with paper towels to absorb the oil. Serve.

Classic Roast Beef has been famous for many years. In fact, it is considered as a national dish in the United Kingdom. No matter how you like your beef to be, this recipe ensures that the flavor will remain to be as good as expected.

How do you like your Roast Beef served? It is common to serve Roast Beef sandwich. This is composed of thinly sliced cold Roast Beef Slices in between your favorite bread slices. Roast Beef can also be served hot with some mashed potatoes or pudding.

Gravy is the best partner of this dish. One of the tastiest gravy that we recommend is the mushroom gravy. It is quick and easy to make, and it really tastes good. You should try this to see for yourself.

Pasta has become a universal dish throughout the years. At this time, almost everybody loves pasta. In fact, each of us might have a couple or more pasta dishes that we really like.

The most common pasta dishes are those with tomato based sauces. The second probably are pasta with cream sauce. These can be done easily by using ready-made sauces bought from the grocery — you can also make your own sauce from scratch (this is more ideal).

An easy pasta recipe for me is something simple and does not require any sauce at all. The simplest pasta dish that I ever made only needed garlic, basil, and tomatoes — plus a little bit of olive oil (or butter) and parmesan cheese. It is very quick, easy, and full of wonderful flavor and aroma.

You can try this by following the recipe below. Oh, and before I forget, I also topped my easy pasta recipe with some seared scallops to make it more special. It is like enjoying 2 different dishes in one eating.

Happy eating!

Ingredients:

1 lb sea scallops
1/4 cup butter
1 lb spaghetti cooked according to package instructions
2 medium tomatoes, diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
10 pieces fresh basil leaves, chopped
1/4 cup parmesan cheese

Procedure:

1. Melt butter in a pan.
2. When the butter becomes hot, sear both sides of the scallops until color turns light brown.
3. Remove the scallops from the pan. Set aside.
4. On the same pan with the remaining butter, put-in tomatoes and garlic. Cook for 30 seconds to a minute.Note: Do not let the garlic brown.
5. Add basil and pasta. Toss while cooking to mix all the ingredients.
6. Turn of the heat. Add the parmesan cheese and toss once more.
7. Transfer to a serving plate and top with seared scallops.

Along with the amazing structures are awesome Chicagoans who enjoy life through good food. Thanks to the wonderful chefs who took time to hone their craft at the Culinary Schools in Chicago.

The famous deep dish pizza and Chicago dog are just some of the popular foods in the windy city. It might sound like common foods, but it is extra-ordinary, in reality, because skill and passion were part of the ingredients. These are just few of the countless evidence on how well-trained Chicago chefs are. It all boils down to their training in their culinary schools plus their work experience.
